LAYING THE FOUNDATION
MasonAccess (Masonry Accessories, Inc.) traces its roots back to James Richard (JR) Snyder, returning WWII veteran, first began his journey as a brick mason, laying the foundation—both literally and figuratively—for a family legacy in the masonry industry. In late 1946, JR joined his friend’s fathers business, Clearance Gleeson Construction Company, as a bricklayer after serving an apprenticeship.
In 1948, while serving as a foreman for Clearance Gleeson, JR worked weekends constructing fireplaces, chimneys, and outdoor barbeques.
In 1949, with Mr. Gleeson’s blessings, JR founded J.R. Snyder Company, Inc. The company quickly grew in the booming post war Michigan commercial construction economy.
In 1952, JR was sponsored by Clearance Gleeson to become president of the Detroit Mason Contractors Association. A position he held on and off for 30 years. The organization later morphed into the Mason Contractors Association (Detroit).
In 1956, while serving as President of Detroit Mason Contractor’s Association, JR took inspiration from friends he met from the St. Louis Mason Contractors Association who had initiated design assistance to the architectural community. He helped seed the formation of the Masonry Institute of Michigan, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing masonry through education, promotion, and technical services.
By the late 1970s, JR’s sons Jim Jr, Joe, Jerry, Jon, Jeff, Jack, Judd & Justin followed in the trade serving as tenders, bricklayers, foreman, superintendents, estimators, project managers and in the shop. Jim Jr. formed his own company by 1975. In 1981 during the great recession in Michigan, Jim Snyder Jr. played a pivotal role with Jim Gendron (currently with Fendt BLock) in helping save the Masonry Institute of Michigan by asking cement producers to assess $0.05 per bag of mortar.
By the late 1980s JR downsized his business to retire. His son Jon formed J&J Construction. They are still thriving as commercial mason contractors serving SE Michigan. Second son Joe joined brother Jim in Texas for four years, then spent the balance of his career with Anastassi Masonry/Pompano FL and Dan LePore Masonry PA. Third oldest son, Jerry Snyder, bricklayer turned customer service representative for Huron Cement (later known as LeFarge and Holcim Cement), currently with Best Block -Detroit. His daughter, Courtney Snyder, US Airforce veteran, received a Construction Management degree from Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) now serving as a Construction Manager for the Chicago Cubs.
Youngest son, Justin Snyder, earned a Civil Engineering degree at the University of Michigan, later founded Snyder Construction – a thriving commercial construction company based in SE Michigan.
In 1988, JR’s son, Jeff Snyder, and his wife, Terry Snyder, built on this legacy, founding the original Masonpro in Northville, Michigan. Under their leadership, Masonpro quickly grew into a nationally recognized provider of high-quality masonry accessories, technical expertise, and unmatched customer service. Dedication to the industry and strong relationships with customers established Masonpro as a go-to resource across the United States.
Jeff Snyder has dedicated three decades to advancing the masonry industry through leadership and technical expertise. He has served on the Board of Trustees for the Masonry Institute of Michigan (MIM) for 20 years, contributing to the growth and integrity of masonry practices statewide. A founding member of the MIM Generic Wall Design Committee since its inception in 1994, where he helped, with other industry professionals, play a key role in developing standardized wall systems for the industry. Jeff is also a Commenting Member of The Masonry Society, offering insight on national masonry building code requirements.
In 1998, Masonry Accessories, Inc. emerged as an accessories provider in Orlando, Florida, founded by Jay Snyder and Lisa Snyder. They focused on providing Florida’s masonry and construction sector with top-quality masonry products, expert knowledge, and a passionate devotion to the industry.
Jay Snyder dedicated three decades to advancing the masonry industry through leadership and technical expertise. He has served several roles with the Florida Masonry Association, including Secretary, Treasurer, and Board Chairman, from 2003 to 2011. He is a Voting member of The Masonry Society (Code) for North America. Jay was appointed by the Florida Governor in 2016 to serve on the Florida Concrete and Masonry Education Council. Jay’s children Katelin, Jake and Ben worked with their family over the years.
In 2001, Jerry and his brother Jeff introduced an innovative and cost-effective flashing solution for managing moisture within single-wythe concrete masonry walls. This revolutionary product, Block Flash, effectively drained internal moisture, helping to protect the durability of the structure. Patented in 2001, it has since evolved and is now known as the essential solution for single-wythe drainage.
The 2000s were a pivotal era of growth that reshaped MasonPro’s trajectory, solidifying its position in the masonry industry. This period saw market expansion and significant increases in operational scale, setting the stage for future successes and cementing its legacy. The family business achieved success through its unwavering commitment to customer service and by fostering their highly skilled and efficient team and customer service.
Jeff and Jay’s sister, Susan (Snyder) Kelly and brother, Justin Snyder worked for MasonPro in the early years. Followed by Susan Kelly’s daughter Megan (Kelly) Dodak and later by Jeff’s sister Nancy who continued with MasonPro who later joined MasonAccess. Nephews Nate, Zach, and James III Snyder also served their formidable years under the company umbrella. James went on to work with BGI, Baker, Burgrabe, JK Masonry while attending college, before landing with Davenport Masonry as an estimator/PM. Jeff’s daughters Susan (Snyder) Young, and Marie (Snyder) McCormick worked in and out of the family business for years – Marie later joined MasonAcess in 2024, also in a leadership role.
In late 2018, Masonpro consummated a sell/ stock merger with Construction Supply Group to (CSG) whereby Jeff Snyder continued as President and general manager. Nearly three years later, CSG merged with HD Supply to become known as White Cap. Jeff remained with them until late 2023.
In late winter 2024, the Snyder family story came full circle with Jay and Lisa entrusting Jeff, Terry and to step in and carry on the Masonry Accessories, Inc. legacy in Florida. By 2025 they expanded to include markets around the country. They are doing so by re-embracing the tradition of providing high-quality masonry accessories, with unmatched technical expertise, and the zeal to serve professional mason contractors wherever they are in need. Today, the Snyders, along with the other professional team members, work side by side, blending decades of industry experience, knowledge, and a shared commitment to serving the masonry community.
In 2025, MasonAccess (Masonry Accessories, Inc.) expands into the Midwest to better serve existing mason contractor partners and explore new opportunities.
